Laboratory testing of soil and rocks

Our sophisticated testing programmes are crucial to projects with great sensitivity to soil behaviour - high-rise buildings, bridges, dams, power plants, mines, levees, offshore platforms and tunnels, for example. Our accredited soils laboratories around the world use state-of-the-art equipment to perform testing to local and internationally accepted standards.

At our accredited laboratory facilities we analyse soil samples from your onshore and offshore projects around the world. Established for decades, we are internationally recognised for our capabilities and resources. High-volume capacity and automated, around-the-clock capability promote the expedited turnaround of test data.

Fugro’s laboratories routinely perform the following testing assignments:

  • Static testing – triaxial stress path, direct simple shear, ring shear, constant rate of strain consolidation
  • Dynamic testing – resonant column, torsional shear, cyclic triaxial, cyclic direct simple shear, pulse velocity
  • Extrusion and preparation of up to 6-inch diameter undisturbed samples
  • Classification
  • Mechanical grain size and hydrometer analysis
  • Water content
  • Atterberg limits
  • Unconfined compression tests
  • Q and R triaxial compression tests
  • Permeability tests including flexible wall permeameter tests
  • Compaction tests (15/25 blow)
  • Direct shear tests
  • Consolidation tests

Our laboratories test soils when the engineering properties of soil or rock influence the design of major structures or where ground risk is an important consideration. Examples include:

  • Deep foundations on land and offshore
  • Shallow foundations
  • Levees, dams and other earth structures
  • Coastal structures
  • Deep excavations
  • Pipelines and other buried structures
  • Bridge foundations and abutments
  • Slope stability
  • Ground water barriers
  • Geohazard assessments
    • Landslides
    • Liquefaction
    • Lateral spreading
    • Seismic ground shaking
    • Settlement

Fugro’s industry leading facilities undertake soil analysis for projects around the world and deliver the report via your selected method (secure website, email, fax or hardcopy). Not only do we undertake sophisticated testing programmes but we can also assist you with packing the materials and transporting samples to enable minimal sample disturbance. We can also train you in classification and sampling procedures as well as permeability testing.
